Why Autism and Lyme?

Autism and Lyme share significantly similar manifestations in the neurotoxin, inflammation, detoxification, dietary, nutritional, advocacy, legislative and judicial arenas.

Why ADD & ADHD?

We are in the midst of a documented epidemic of developmental disorders including autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), pervasive development disorder (PDD), and nonverbal learning disorder (NLD). Our local, regional, and national communities are woefully under-equipped to diagnose, treat, and educate these children.

Information

Autism is costing the United States close to $1 trillion dollars a year and will increase to be twice that without early detection, intervention and prevention measures. Many of our children who have been on the spectrum are becoming adults on the spectrum, and are no longer being educated, or properly treated, so as to enable their inherent gifts. The reality of this costs each taxpayer more and more every year. When we enable our population to use their gifts, everyone benefits.

Lyme disease is the fastest growing infectious disease in America today. It is spreading at epidemic proportions, particularly in the north-east, and the state of Maryland is one of the most epidemic states. Lyme disease is spread by some species of ticks and is one of several tick-borne illnesses that is causing chronic illness that can ruin the lives of adults and children alike. Since it can infect virtually all the body organs, Lyme disease has many symptoms which can mimic other diseases.

Education

Graciously provided by Martha Gabler

There have been several responses of people interested in home- schooling a child with autism. I have been home-schooling my son since he was 4 years old, and the area that I know the most about is teaching methods, curriculum, and how to make adaptations to help such a child learn. Below is a brief list of methods that have worked well for us, plus my personal list of recommended books to read if you are fairly new to the task of teaching a child with autism.

First of all, I recommend that autism parents consider looking at the website of the Organization for Autism Research, a very reputable organization that has excellent information about teaching and other topics. Their website is www.researchautism.org, and they are located in Virginia.

Second, the educational approaches that work best for children with autism are all based on the science of applied behavior analysis. As it is a daunting task to educate a child with autism, and as it takes a lot of work and technical knowledge to set up a good program, autism parents may also wish to consider hiring a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to help them for the first few months. You can locate a BCBA at the website of the Behavior Analysis Certification Board at www.bacb.com. As with all autism treatments, the services of a BCBA will probably not be covered by your health insurance, but it doesn't hurt to check.

The following information lists a very brief description of, and contact information about, good behaviorally-based teaching methods for children with autism:

Educational Recommendations:

What has worked for us in teaching our special needs child If you are teaching a special needs child, I recommend highly the teaching methods, curricula and measurement practices used in the field of Applied Behavioral Analysis. The following list of methods and curricula all fall under the Behavior Analysis umbrella. Extensive information about Behavior Analysis and all these methods is available on the internet.

Verbal Behavior Therapy Verbal Behavior Therapy (VB) is a behaviorally-based, therapeutic approach for teaching children with autism and other developmental disabilities. VB teaches the functional units of language: receptive, expressive, mimetic/echoics, mands (requests), tacts (labels) and intraverbals. A VB program teaches the child across all units of language using Discrete Trial Training (DTT), Natural Environment Teaching (NET), and errorless teaching techniques. The Verbal Behavior Network is one of many groups that offers training. Address P.O. Box 2122, Brick, NJ, 08723, Phone: 732-840-1934, www.vbnetwork.org.

Direct Instruction Curricula for Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Language

For children (and adults): Direct Instruction (DI) Curricula are outstanding for teaching academic skills, especially reading, arithmetic and writing. See the Association for Direct Instruction, P.S. Box 10252, Eugene, OR, 97440, 1-800-995-2462, www.adihome.org. Direct Instruction curricula are available from SRA McGraw-Hill, 220 East Danieldale, Rd., DeSoto, TX, 75115, 1-888-SRA-4543, www.sraonline.com. They are superb curricula based on scientific principles of human learning, and have a 40+ year record of research validation; for detailed research information see www.SRADirectInstruction.com. For an inexpensive introduction to a Direct Instruction Reading program, see the book Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Dr. Siegfried Engelmann, readily available at bookstores and online.

TAGteach (Teaching with Acoustical Guidance)

For children and adults. TAGteach is a superior yet simple method for improving behaviors and teaching skills of all types. It is easy to learn, easy to implement and inexpensive. TAGteach combines an event marker signal with positive reinforcement. It has many features which make it particularly helpful in teaching children with autism. See www.tagteach.com.

Precision Teaching

For children and adults. A scientifically based method of measuring human behavior and performance using the Standard Celeration Chart. Excellent tool for improving behavior and learning. See. www.precisionteachingresource.net and www.precisionteaching.pbwiki.com

Now, for the reading list. I recommend the following books:
  1. "The Out of Snyc Child" by Carole Kranowitz. This book is very parent-friendly and explains children's sensory profiles; very helpful in understanding your child's world.

  2. "Don't Shoot The Dog" by Karen Pryor. This book is an excellent way to learn about behavioral principles and how to apply them. It is well-written and easy to understand.

  3. "Educating Children with Learning and Behavior Problems" by Dr. Martin Alan Kozloff. This book is it! This book explains exactly and precisely how to educate a child with a disability. It has a Behavior Evaluation Scale that will help you assess exactly what your child's skill level is, and how to improve his/her skills. It explains exactly how to organize your teaching materials, how to teach, what to teach, and what to do next. Ironically, this book is now out of print, but you can easily find a copy in the used book market. I found my copy at abebooks.com for $2.17, and it is worth one thousand times that much money. Upon reading this book I was stunned to realize that the methods and the knowledge base for teaching a child with autism have been around since the 1960s, but they are still not implemented in schools. This book is 448 pages and will take any reader some time to get through, however, if you cannot afford private consultants and therapists, this book will provide you with almost all the information you will need to get going on your own and do a very good job with your child.

We started out with "traditional" ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), and I switched to Verbal Behavior Therapy (VB) as soon as I found out about it because it has more and better teaching procecures (in my opinion). Once my son started demonstrating some skills, I moved him into Direct Instruction (DI) curricula for reading, arithmetic and language. Direct Instruction is a very powerful and successful instructional technology; the programs are very expensive, but absolutely worth it. My son, despite the severity of his condition, can read, write and do math very well, plus he is very proud of his educational accomplishments and is very eager to learn more. Precision Teaching is excellent for developing fluency in academic and other skill areas, and for behavior management. And TAGteach is simply a fantastic method for teaching the non-academic skills: how to behave in public, what to do at the playground, and so forth.

I recommend these methods whole-heartedly to any parent of a child with autism.

Chemicals in Clothing and Textiles

This is the first version of a list of chemical substances, which one shall be especially aware of, that can be used in the production of clothes and textiles. The list has been prepared to be a practical help in production of and professional trading with textiles and clothes. The list will be a living document adjusted to the need of the users; it is our intention to develop it further as we gain experience from practical use of the list. Therefore, we are keenly interested in receiving comments from the users – what is your experience with the list in practical use, and what are your future requirements and wishes? This English translation of the list of chemicals has been financially supported by The Federation of Norwegian Commercial and Service Enterprises (Handels- og Servicenæringens Hovedorganisasjon - HSH) and The Ethical Trading Initiative - Norway (ETI-N). A great number of chemicals that can be applied in the production of textiles and clothes show hazardous characteristics. There is no problem to increase the length of the list. However, the list shall be a useful tool for practical purposes to help business make demands to their suppliers. This implies that the list cannot be exhaustive – it must not be too long and complicated.
